Structure

Structure, peatland

What is recorded here

Half a metre wide and no more than a hand span deep, the brushwood still lies NNW-SSE in the drain face, waiting to be judged. It may be a discarded bundle, a child's game, or the last trace of a structure the peat swallowed whole. The wetland keeps both possibilities alive, refusing to choose between human intention and natural drift.
A loose arrangement (Wth 0.24m; D 0.13m) of light brushwood and twigs in the drain face. The brushwood is 1-2 pieces deep and is orientated NNW-SSE. The site sits in moderately humified Sphagnum peat. The site is located 0.8m NE of SMR OF007-275----. The sites are comparable in form but their relationship has not been established. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1993. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument. The original survey description was compiled by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin). Assessed and revised by: Caimin O'Brien, Paul Walsh Date of upload: 23 May 2011
