What is recorded here

Milling broke the alder rod in Offaly, yet it still lies across the peatland like a forgotten measure. A man may have held that length when marking a ditch or building a small crane, but the earth kept no witness. The rod resists easy belief because it offers no hole, no joint and no pattern. It is a shape that appeared, not a structure that can be proven.

A piece of alder brushwood (L 0.81m; diam. 0.06m) on the field surface. The piece has been broken as a result of milling. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1993. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument.
