Structure in Lackaghane

Large stone probable fishtrap, date unknown; orientated NW-SE located within the Ilen River Estuary, between mainland and island of Illaunacullin; townland is Lackaghane, Baltimore, Co. Cork. Comprises two arms of stone (scatter of flagstones and slatey siltstone) that were constructed by vertical insertion of stone flags to form a wall type structure; both arms formed an arc with 10m gap between them at deepest part of water flow that may have accommodated a basket of wicker. No wooden stakes evident. Stones are in state of collapse and site might have been reused in later times (from c. 18th century onwards) as a kelp grid to accommodate local seaweed industry.
