Structure in Killeen

This site was excavated (Licence no. 05E0414ext.) within Killeen Castle Demesne in advance of development. Overlying the Anglo-Norman enclosure (ME038-050002-) this rectangular medieval structure (8.2m x 4.5m)and associated cistern was aligned N-S. Constructed from clay boned limestone block it survived from 1-3 courses in height. Internally nine distinct floor deposits were identified. Analysis of the deposit indicated a high content of bread wheat. Also present were the bones of a whole salmon and the faunal evidence indicated that meat was being hung indicating a storage facility. A radiocarbon date range of AD 1030-1250 was returned although pottery recovered indicated it was used during the latter part of that timeframe (Baker 2009, 63).
