Avondale Castle stands on Stonehouse Road in Strathaven, a medieval ruin reduced to foundations and scattered stone. It may have been a busy hall, a defended home or a forgotten estate, but no surviving chamber remains to prove which. What is left suggests a place that was built, occupied, abandoned and half-erased.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Strathaven, Stonehouse Road, Avondale Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Avondale Castle was built in the 14th century by the Lindsay family, who were prominent in Scottish history. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the region and its association with the Earls of Crawford.
