Stone row in Ballykilmurry

Stone row

What is recorded here

Not visible at ground level. Stanley (1870, 27-9) describes the site as a large tumulus (OF016-006001-) with three large stones placed in a line on its summit. According to local information the mound was bulldozed several years ago. According to Stanley there was a possible megalithic structure (OF016-043----) known as the 'giants bed' located in close proximity to the mound. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
Likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, the stone row may have had ceremonial or funerary significance, possibly aligned with astronomical features. The disturbance of the site by later activity, including bulldozing, has obscured its original use and any associated folklore.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
