Stone head in Kiltoghert

A carved bishop's head with his mitre (H 0.33cm; Wth 18cm; D 15cm) at the apex of a window moulding from a flat-arched window, probably dating from a fifteenth century redevelopment of Kiltoghert parish church (LE027-079001-), is set up in the graveyard beside the graveslab (LE027-079001-). There is a tale that at one of the first battles of the Nine Years War in 1593 at Tulsk, Co. Roscommon, Edmond Magauran, (McGowen or Moran), the Archbishop of Armagh, was killed. In order to prevent identification of the body, the head was removed and interred at Kiltoghert (Butler 1932, 74-5). While the death of Magauran is recorded (AFM 1593, 4), the aftermath is not.
