Stone head in Castleterra is a grotesque carved face set above the north doorway of the modern Catholic church in County Cavan, Ireland. Its bulging eyes, squat nose and unsmiling mouth face outward like a guard that stopped smiling centuries ago. An arm rises behind the head, four fingers prying the mouth open while the thumb points upward, as if the stone were still receiving an order it refused to obey.

Built into the wall above the N doorway of the modern Catholic church at Castleterra. Apparently a male head with bulging eyes, squat nose and plain unsmiling mouth. Arm comes from behind the head on the left-hand side. Four fingers are used to open the mouth. The thumb is turned upwards. The head may have come from the early church site c. 25m to W (CV021-006002-). Davies (1948, 80) described it as a 'grotesque of the 15th or 16th century'. Likely dating to the early medieval period, the stone head may have originally served a ritual or symbolic function before being repurposed into the church wall. Its stylized features and outstretched arm may reflect a pre-Christian tradition or a local representation of a guardian or saint.
