Bullaun and the stone head still mark Pubble in County Fermanagh, carrying a name that sounds like a warning rather than a description. The place belongs to the medieval and earlier Christian worlds, when people set stones at edges of fields, roads or memory and left them standing against rain and forgetting. Perhaps a traveller knocked his head against the rock, perhaps a child laughed at its shape, or perhaps someone simply needed a point in the landscape that could be found again in darkness.

The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as STONE HEAD & BULLAUN. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.; MEDIEVAL. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
