Stockbury Castle

Half a castle still stands on the Kent Downs, its northern edge swallowed by a farmyard while the southern ditch and bank remain sharp enough to mark the boundary of a vanished world. Bishop Odo of Bayeux once held this ground before it passed through noble hands to Nicholas de Criol, and a shapeless mass of flintwork inside the ringwork hints at the first stone hall that vanished beneath the soil. The bailey beside it survives as an orchard, its rampart rising five feet above the grass, placing the parish church just outside the defensive line. Stockbury castle does not demand reverence; it invites curiosity about how much human life can disappear beneath an ordinary farm.
