Stirling Castle's outer defences were significantly reinforced during the 18th century, reflecting the strategic military importance of the site. The castle has long been a key stronghold in Scottish history due to its commanding position over the River Forth and its role in numerous conflicts, including the Wars of Scottish Independence.
