In Mallow. Described by FRIAS as follows: 'large railway junction built in 1849. Well-built stone buildings with slate and corrugated roof canopies over platform, supported on cast-iron pillars with wrought-iron cross bearers, three pillars replaced by wrought-iron pillars. The large water tank, 60ft x 30ft, sits on 15 cast-iron pillars with cross supports meeting in attractive cast-iron rosettes. The 8-bay goods depot is of stone with a more modern corrugated sheeting depot further down the line. Wrought-iron passenger bridge standing on 8 cast-iron pillars, subsequently covered and roofed. Modern gantry crane for containerisation'. Station contains three platforms, pedestrian bridge gives access to central island with platforms on either side. Railway station approached by earthen embankments; to S of station the line was carried on a ten-arched bridge over the Blackwater River, partially blown up in 1920s and subsequently rebuilt (O'Sullivan 1983, 64-5), using earlier abutments of coursed ashlar limestone with rock-faced finish. Station built by William Dargan as part of southern link Dublin-Cork railway line. Fermoy branch line inserted to N, opened 1861, closed 1967 (Rowledge 1995, 91).
