Castle Gar, also called Short Castle, stood where Mallow now builds. Men fought fiercely there in 1642, broke the castle, and erased it from the land. The town has grown over the wound ever since.

Site of Short Castle or Castle Gar. No visible surface trace of castle; area now part of Mallow town. Scene of intense fighting in 1642 after which it was destroyed (Grove White 1905-25 vol. 4, 82-3; Gillman 1896a, 22-4). Built by the Fitzgeralds, Earls of Kildare, in the late 15th or early 16th century; it was strategically important in the Confederate Wars and was destroyed during the 1642 siege, marking a significant event in the conflict in Munster.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
