Ballycastle pier holds a prehistoric standing stone from Gortconny, visible in its structure after removal. Men built the pier around an old witness rather than burying it, forcing the sea wall to share its span with something older. The stone stopped being a separate marker and became a load-bearing participant in human ambition.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as STANDING STONE: removed & built into Ballycastle pier. Recorded period: PREHISTORIC; UNCERTAIN. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
