Standing stone (present location) in Ballyheen Middle

Standing stone (present location)

What is recorded here

Two giants fought and fell here, dragging a quarter-tonne stone across the slope before breaking against the earth. The legend sounds like bragging, but the scarred grass and tilted fence suggest the ground itself remembered the impact. What looked like a standing marker may have been a wound in the landscape, marked only because people kept returning to the place where the sky first touched soil.
Not marked on 1842 and 1905 OS 6-inch maps. In pasture, on S-facing slope. Removed from original location (CO023-094001-) c. 1977; now lying beside field fence c. 30m to S. Stone (L 1.5m) is quartzite and irregular in shape. According to Bowman (1934, 408), one of two stones (9897) which landed in position after a pitched battle between two giants.
