Standing stone

Standing stone, pair

What is recorded here

According to Power (1952, 96) Drumgallane, or Drum Galláin, means the hill of the Galláns or standing stones. He records that formerly two standing stones, one slender, the other rather thick were on the hill. A standing stone (WA038-069----), possibly one of those mentioned by Power, was identified in Drumgullane West in 2018. The location of the other standing stone remains unknown. Power, Rev. P. (1952) Place names of the Decies. (second ed.) Cork University Press. Compiled by: Michael Moore and Jean Farrelly Date of revised upload: 25 July 2018
Likely dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, the pair of standing stones in Drumgullane may have served as markers for territorial boundaries, ceremonial alignments, or astronomical observations. The name "Drum Galláin," meaning "hill of the standing stones," suggests their long-standing cultural and possibly spiritual significance in the local landscape.
