Standing stone in Ulacha

Known locally as An Gallán, this low standing stone was not noted by the OS. It is located in rough pastureland, on a SW facing slope at the head of the valley through which a tributary of the Milltown river flows SE towards Dingle Harbour. It stands c. 1.4m high and measures 1.2m x .6m at base; NW-SE. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the stone may have functioned as a boundary marker or ritual monument. Local folklore sometimes associates such stones with early Christian hermits or as sites of ancient oaths.
