Standing stone in Moohane

Standing stone described in 1943 as following; ''The standing stone is of porphyry and is 3' 6" [1.07m] high, 3' [0.9m] wide and 1' [0.3m] thick. It stands beside an ancient fence, which shows as a slight ridge on which are five low boulders set at intervals along it. The fence runs east to west down the west slope of a hill, at the foot or which it fades out. Neither the stone nor the fence are marked on the O.S. map' (O'Kelly 1942-3, 182). Listed by Grogan (1989, 271) as 'Moohane 2'. No surface remains visible of standing stone at location marked on Limerick RMP map, the standing stone has either been removed or the location of the stone on the RMP map is incorrect. The area to the E of the location of the standing stone is now covered in gorse bushes and examination of this area is impossible. It is possible that the standing stone may have been located in this area rather then the current location marked on the RMP map. Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the standing stone in Moohane may have had a ritual or territorial function, as suggested by its placement beside an ancient fence or boundary ridge. Such stones often marked sacred or significant sites in prehistoric landscapes.
