What is recorded here

You can still see it on the north slopes of Gory Hill: a stone 1.25m high, 1.2m wide and about 0.4m thick, set north to south in boggy ground. That much is clear. What is missing is the life that gave it shape. Perhaps people passed it when carrying firewood, dropping butter or bringing children back from the hill. In that case the stone did not need magic; it needed memory.
