Standing stone in Kealanine (bantry By.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Kealanine stands ten centimetres taller than a man’s knee, blocking the eastern path along the Coomhola valley. It is not a grand monument, but a rough rectangular wedge of local stone, still proud after centuries of bog water and grazing feet. Perhaps it marked a boundary, a burial, or a warning to travellers that the river bend belonged elsewhere.
On rough grazing, on bog on a S-facing slope on the W side of the valley of the Coomhola River. This standing stone (1.05m x 0.55m; H 1.1m) is irregular in plan and roughly rectangular in section and is orientated E-W. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
