What is recorded here
No visible trace remains of the standing stone in Gleann Na Huamha, though it once rose five feet above level ground near a Glennahoo tributary. That sudden disappearance transforms a forgotten marker into a living mystery, inviting imagination rather than certainty.
There is no visible trace of the 'Gallaun' marked on the 1st edition of the OS map and described as 'about 5 feet (1.5m) high and 3 (.9m) thick' (OSNB Stradbally, 20). It stood on level ground less than 100m S of a tributary of the Glennahoo river.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 152. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
