You can still see the expanded terminals of the Latin cross carved on its north face, even though a field wall now swallows the lower stone. The crest sits above the Emlagh valley like a marker dropped at the throat of the mountain gap, watching the river escape toward Castlemaine Harbour. Perhaps people once read that gap as a door, and set the cross beside it to hold what the water carried through.
This stone stands on the crest of a low hill located centrally in the Emlagh river valley, immediately N of the gap in the coastal mountain ridge through which the river flows towards Castlemaine Harbour. It is now incorporated into an E-W field wall which obscures the lower portion of its N face. It is 2.65m high, c. 1m wide and .6m thick; NE-SW. A Latin cross with expanded terminals has been carved on the N face. On the 2nd edition of the OS map a standing stone is also shown untitled c. 50m to WNW; it does not survive.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 102. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
