Standing stone in Curraghnaloughra

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Thirty paces from the ringfort in Curraghnaloughra, an irregular stone still stands leaning slightly east. It is not much bigger than a person, yet it has watched herds move through the pasture and storms cross the western sky for longer than memory reaches. Perhaps people once tied offerings to it or measured shadow against it before the fort was built. Whatever it marked, it never fell.
In pasture with commanding views to W. Irregular stone aligned ENE-WSW (H 1.08m; 1.53m x 0.38m). Ringfort (CO120-061002-) 18m to W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Probably dates to the early medieval period, given its proximity to a ringfort, and may have had a ceremonial or territorial function. No specific folklore or inscriptions are recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
