Standing stone in Cool (coshmore and Coshbride By.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Situated on a W-facing slope. This is the possible original location of a stone which was thought to have been set up as a scratching post. It was removed c. 18m to the S and re-erected as a gate post (WA020-031----), where it remains as a conglomerate sandstone upright (dims. 0.5m x 0.28m; H 1.23m). The stone tapers towards the top and has a sloping shoulder. A socket (0.05m x 0.02m) to receive a gate bar has been carved into the stone 0.68m above ground on its current NE face. This may have been known to Power (1952, 41) as a dallán. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 31 July 2013
