Marianne touched the Clonkeiffy stone and it gave back warmth, not memory. Behind her the drumlin ridge leaned forward like a listener. She wondered whether people had ever spoken there or only cattle had rubbed themselves clean on its edge. The stone did not answer either way. It waited for skin, breath and movement, then returned them unchanged.

Not marked on any OS ed. Sited on the W slope of a low drumlin ridge. Small standing stone, approximately triangular in profile (Wth at base c. 2m; H c. 1.5m). Some small loose stones at its base. May be a scratching post for cattle rather than an antiquity. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). Likely dating to the Late Neolithic or Bronze Age, this small standing stone may have had a ritual or territorial function. Its possible use as a scratching post suggests later, perhaps medieval, utilitarian adaptation.
