Standing stone in Cill Rialaigh

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Not marked on the OS maps, this possible standing stone is located in fairly rough pastureland on the E slopes of Bolus mountain, overlooking the mouth of Kenmare Bay. It is of regular elevation and has maximum measurements of 1.35m x 1m x .35m; E-W. It tapers to a width of .7m at the top. A stone row (KE097-038----) and a fallen standing stone (KE097-039----) are located a short distance to NE. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 240. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
Likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, this standing stone may have functioned as a territorial marker, ceremonial focus, or astronomical alignment point. No specific folklore is recorded for the site, though its coastal position suggests a possible connection to seafaring or landscape significance in prehistoric times.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
