Standing stone in Bellanascaddan

Standing stone

What is recorded here

On a ridge in Bellanascaddan, a stone stands 1.72m high, 1.1m wide and 0.97m thick, pointing east-west across good land. It is the kind of place where people may have marked boundary, ceremony or memory before written records existed. The ridge carries wind from both seas, and the stone remains visible because it was set where visibility mattered.

Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
