Standing stone in Beach is a rectangular stone aligned ENE-WSW on a north-facing slope overlooking Whiddy Island and Bantry Bay. It stands 1.35 metres tall in pasture, thin enough at 0.17 metre to seem cut rather than broken, yet heavy enough to have resisted every storm that swept the bay. People may have set it there as a marker, a warning or a gift to the sea, but the stone no longer explains itself. It only watches the water return.
