What is recorded here
Standing stone in Altashane OR Cabadooey is a narrow Donegal stone, two metres seven tall and only twenty-two centimetres thick. It stands on an east-facing pasture slope, marking a place where people once stood before the land, not behind it. Its cup marks and one cup-and-circle suggest repeated visits, perhaps for prayer, boundary, memory or warning. The thin stone still catches the light like a blade, waiting for someone to remember why it was set upright.
A standing stone 2.76m high × 1.35m wide × 0.22m thick; N-S. On the E face there is 1 cup-and-circle and at least 19 cup-marks (DG011-014001-). There are also some possible cup-marks on the W face. Situated in pasture land on an E facing slope.
The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated.

Probably dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, this standing stone likely had ritual or ceremonial significance, as indicated by the cup-and-circle and numerous cup-marks, which are commonly associated with prehistoric ritual activity. Its orientation and placement in an open pastoral landscape may reflect astronomical or territorial markers, though specific folklore or use is not recorded.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
