Standing Stone

Standing Stone is a large menhir set between Millstreet and Ballinagree in County Cork, Ireland. It is the kind of long upright rock that people across Europe raised during the middle Bronze Age, yet nobody now living remembers the hands that tilted it free of the ground or the reason they gave it up. It may have marked a boundary, watched a road, or waited for ceremonies that music and hunger have forgotten. The stone still stands where men and women once believed it must, which is more company than most ruins receive.
