What is recorded here
St Peters Well stands in the centre of Peterswell village, enclosed in a mortared limestone house with a flagstone roof and an iron gate. Dermot Donelan of Sylane built or rebuilt it in 1840, carving his name across the lintel above the southeast doorway. The stream feeding the well disappears about five metres away, perhaps continuing underground rather than ending. People may have visited for water, prayer or curiosity, while the stones still mark the exact spot where that local devotion became visible.
In the centre of Peterswell village. This spring well, dedicated to St Peter, is enclosed within a well-built mortared wellhouse constructed of mortared rubble limestone walls and a pitched roof of flagstones. The square-headed doorway is to the SE and is secured by a short iron gate. A cut-stone lintel over it bears the inscription ‘Dermot Donelan of Sylane 1840’. Inside modern guard rails surround the well. Below the roof, on opposing sides, two pairs of putlog-holes are visible. The well is fed by a stream that appears to stop c. 5m to the SW of the wellhouse, though it may continue underground.

St Peter's Well is dedicated to St Peter, one of the most venerated apostles in Christian tradition, and was likely a site of pilgrimage and prayer. Holy wells dedicated to St Peter are often associated with cures for skin ailments and general protection, reflecting broader medieval Christian devotional practices.
