St Peters Church (1949-50)

Site of medieval parish church of St. Peter's; first referred to in decretal letter of 1199 but 'it is not until 1306 that there is a clear reference to it as a parish church' (Bradley et al. 1985, 76). Hardiman'smap (c. 1601) depicts single-naved structure without aisles, transepts or tower. Demolished in 1782 and present church built in 1785-8, tower at E end added 1838 (Henchion 1988, 110); now used as store. Remains of graveyard to W (CO074-03404-). St Peter's Church in Cork City, built in 1949–50, is a modern replacement for a medieval parish church first mentioned in a decretal letter of 1199 and clearly established by 1306. Dedicated to St Peter, it reflects the continuity of Christian worship on the site for over 800 years.
