St. Marys Church

Church

What is recorded here

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Situated within the SE angle of the town walls, this was the parish church of Drogheda in Meath established by Hugh de Lacy before 1186. A priory was in existence here by 1309 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 288). There appear to be no obvious remains of this foundation surviving, but there are ruins of a small structure immediately to the S of the modern church. However, this is featureless and is unlikely to date to the medieval period. (Bradley 1984b, 94-6)
