St Marys Catholic Church

In Newmarket. Cruciform church (long axis E-W with transepts to E). Lit by pointed window opes with switchline tracery; entrance through porch on S transept. Bellcote atop N gable. Galleries in transepts. Built in 1834 on site donated by Richard Aldworth, replacing 18th-century church in Scarteen to N (Allen 1973, 91). Described by Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 428-429) as 'a spacious edifice...the altar...is a copy of that of the ancient abbey at Quin'. Wooden altar replaced in 1931, gallery in nave removed 1969 (Allen ibid.). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
