St. Johns Well

On a low rise of ground in gently undulating pasture with a medieval church (TS046-048001-) and graveyard (TS046-048004-) c. 100m to the W. The holy well consists of a low semi-circular stone wall (diam. 2.2m; wall T 0.65m; H 0.8m) enclosing a dried-up well with a stream exiting the well at the E. It is described by Murphy (1927, 64-7) as an 'old covered well in a field. It is known as St John's Well and the water is believed to cure diseases of the eyes'. St. John's Well is associated with St. John the Baptist and traditionally linked to healing and protection. It is visited on St. John's Eve (23–24 June) when people may collect water for blessings or cure ailments such as skin conditions and fever.
