Ss Peter and Paul's Presbytery

Corner-sited terraced four-bay four-storey presbytery and former school, with chamfered end bay to the east, built 1879, as a group with the adjoining building to west. Now also in use for parish social services. Pitched slate roof with red brick chimneystacks. Red brick walls with limestone eaves course, continuous sill courses and plinth. Segmental-arched openings to ground floor, paired pointed arch openings set in recessed panels to first floor, pointed arch openings to second floor set in recessed panels and paired pointed arch openings to third floor, with ashlar and carved limestone dressings. Fixed timber windows to ground floor, and timber sash windows to upper floors, with some replacement uPVC windows. Timber panelled door, set in segmental-arch opening with ashlar limestone dressings. Wrought-iron railings set on limestone plinths to site, and ashlar limestone steps leading to entrance doors.

This building forms part of an interesting pair with the adjoining building to the west. This pair, by architect Robert Walker, is of apparent architectural design and makes a notable and positive addition to the streetscape. The irregular form is articulated and enhanced by the variety of openings and materials utilised in the construction. The building retains many interesting features and materials, such as the timber sash windows, timber panelled door, cast-iron railings and limestone steps.
