Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Spero as Steamship (period Unassigned)-(1916). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
The *Spero* was a steamship built in 1916, later involved in World War II as a cargo vessel. It was sunk in 1942 by a German U-boat in the North Atlantic, resulting in the loss of all 35 crew members and a cargo of military supplies; its wreck is now a protected war grave and significant as a reminder of the Battle of the Atlantic.
