Site of Kilrodane Church

Church

What is recorded here

Kilrodane Church vanished completely, leaving no wall, stone or marker behind. A little church and burial ground dedicated to St Rodan once stood there, but both were destroyed and the spot became a meadow. By 1840 even the graveyard had been levelled, erasing the place from sight. What remains is only the name and the certainty that something holy was buried beneath ordinary grass.
No visible surface trace of church within levelled graveyard (LI028-131002-). Dedicated to St Rodan; no vestige of site in 1840 (OSL vol. 1, 24). Described in the Ordnance Survey Letters as 'there was a little church and burial ground dedicated to St. Rodan, but both have been destroyed and the spot which they occupied is now part of a meadow' (ibid.). Westropp (1904-5, 402) recorded the following details on Kilrodane; ‘Kilrodan, with New Grange, 1349 (Close R.); Kilvidane, 1657 (D.S.B. 7). Site - The church and graveyard are now levelled'.
