site of Killell Church

Marked faintly as a rectangular enclosure (dims. c. 20m NW-SE; c. 20m NE-SW) described as the 'site of Killell Church and Grave Yard' on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6 inch map, and similarly on the 1924 ed. It is situated on a NE-facing slope of a W-E spur between W-E streams c. 180m to the S and c. 50m to the N. It is possibly of early origin. This is a roughly circular but overgrown and slightly raised clearing in a coniferous forest (diam. c. 40m) defined by a scarp N-SE, with traces of a fosse (Wth of top 2.7m; D 0.4m) NW-N. There is a cairn (diam. 5m) around a tree stump in centre but there is no evidence of burial. A small cross inscribed slab (dims 0.4m x 0.33m; T 5cm) was found on the site and is now in the Wexford County Museum in Enniscorthy (Kelly 1988, 96, fig. 31d).
