What is recorded here
Cloghans is a partially destroyed horseshoe-shaped cairn near the cliff edge to the northeast of Dún Dúcathair in County Galway. It may be the eroded remains of the large Cloghaun described as having a small chamber in the wall still perfect. The site belongs to the same coastal landscape as the promontory fort, where people lived, buried or marked memory, and left behind stone that the sea and time have worn into a thin curve.
Near the cliff edge to NE of Dún Dúcathair (GA119-001----). Westropp (1914, 334) mentions the existence of 'three hut-sites, with middens, outside the wall of the abattis' or chevaux-de-frise of this promontory fort, but concluded that 'they are probably late'. All that survives today is a partially destroyed horseshoe-shaped cairn (E-W 5.4m) with an entrance at E and traces of double walling at N. This structure may well be the eroded remains of the 'large Cloghaun nearly destroyed' described in the OS Letters as being 'To the east of Dún Dúcathair (O'Flanagan 1927a, Vol. 3, 140). It is described therein as having been '18 feet, 6 inches [5.65m] in diameter and [had] a small chamber in the wall still perfect'.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993).
