(Site of) Church

Described as the site of a church on the 1839 and 1940 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and located on a plateau. The possible parish church of Rathroe is built within rath (WX039-047001-). This consists of the foundations (Wth 1.3-2m; H c. 0.4m) of a rectangular structure (ext. dims. 22m ESE-WNW; 7m NNE-SSW) with an entrance gap towards the W end of the S wall. The E end of the church breaches the inner bank of the rath. There is no evidence of burial, but it was recorded in 1940 that it had been used for burial (OSFM). The church remains may be post-medieval in date. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996).
