Oldtown hides a vanished castle in Crannagh, County Kilkenny, preserved only through John Grace and the land he held when the survey came. Maps from 1655 to 1838 keep pointing at the same empty ground, forcing imagination to build the rooms, stairs and fires that once stood there.

Indicated on the 1st (1838) ed. OS 6-inch map and 1900 revision as the site of a castle. The castle is not visible at ground level. The castle is indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of 'Cranagh', with a large house (KK018-035002-) to the W and on the Down Survey parish map of 'Tulleroane' with two houses in the vicinity, one to the W (KK018-035002-) and one (KK018-035003-) to the S (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). The terrier accompanying the parish map lists 'John Grace protest[ant]' as the proprietor of 'Ouldtowne' in 1640and states that the land was 'unforfeited', which implies that the landowner had not sided with the rebels in the 1641 Rising (ibid.). Built in the 17th century, the Castle of Oldtown is noted on the Down Survey maps from 1655-56, marking its significance as a historical landmark during the Cromwellian era in Ireland. Its importance lies in representing the period's fortifications and land surveys.
