Castle (in ruins)

On relatively level ground with a stream running NW-SE c. 30m to the W. In 1453, Edmund Mac Richard Butler had a transcript of the Psalter of Cashel made at the castle of Pottlerath (Carrigan 1905, vol. 3, 433). Carrigan (ibid.) attributes the building of the nearby church (KK022-003----), c. 90m to the N, in the mid-15th-century to Edmund Mac Richard Butler. He states that the castle ‘was levelled with the earth about the year 1800. It stood about 50 or 60 yards in front of Pottlerath Ho.' (ibid. 434). The OS Letters (1839) record that 'no vestige of it [the castle] remains now' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 245 (82). The location of the castle is indicated on the on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map and 1899-1900 revision as being in the SW angle of the farm/stable yard associated with Pottlerath House. It is not visible above ground level.
