Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, fought against the forces of King Henry III of England in the Battle of Evesham on August 4, 1265. He was defeated and killed, ending his attempt to establish a form of representative government through the Provisions of Oxford and the subsequent Parliament of 1265, which included commoners for the first time.
