The Siege of Derry was fought in 1689 during the struggle between the deposed King James II and King William III. Thirteen apprentice boys had shut Derry's gates against a Jacobite regiment in December 1688. King James came to the walls in April 1689, but the city refused to surrender. Jacobite forces then surrounded Derry for 105 days. Hunger and disease killed thousands inside before the relief ship Mountjoy broke the boom across the River Foyle in late July and the siege was lifted.
