Siege of Athlone

Athlone endured the heaviest bombardment in Irish history when twelve thousand cannonballs struck its west town over ten days in June 1691. The stone bridge broke, the streets became rubble, and five hundred defenders bled in the final surprise assault across the old ford. William’s men climbed fortifications the Jacobites had forgotten to destroy, taking the river crossing before St Ruth withdrew west into the dark.
