Shurock House

Detached three-bay single-storey country house, built c.1760, with a later single-storey Gothic wing to the west having two-storey Gothic towers to either end (east and west), built c.1810. Now ruinous and largely overgrown with ivy. Roof now collapsed, probably originally pitched. Lime roughcast rendered walls having square-headed window openings to single-storey section, now boarded up. Rubble limestone construction to later Gothic wing having pointed-arched openings and clasping buttresses with quatrefoil motifs. Square-headed doorcase to the centre of the original building having a limestone surround with heavy architraves with a projecting keystone with fish-scale detail. Cut stone cornice over with pulvinated frieze. Quadrant walls run away from later Gothic block having pointed-arched niches. Complex of ruinous outbuildings to the east and west and former main entrance to the north (15403021). Located to the north of Moate.

A curious mid-eighteenth century house with a substantial later Gothic wing, which now forms an attractive and curious ruin. This building is of considerable architectural interest but it is hard to decipher on account of its now derelict and overgrown condition. Of particular note is the remarkable Classical doorcase to the original building, which is of high artistic merit. The later Gothic wing is richly ornamented with curious Gothic details and motifs. Its slightly clumsy execution suggests that it may be an early example of this style, perhaps late eighteenth-century in date. It is an interesting example of changing architectural tastes and warrants further investigation. This house was the home of a Capt Homan, c.1760 and of a Sir W Jackson-Homan (barrister) in 1837. This building is an interesting addition to the built heritage of Westmeath and survives as a picturesque ruin, adding romantic incident to the landscape to the north of Moate.
