Shanganagh Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Shanganagh Castle stands at the foot of the Dublin Mountains east of Kiltuc Church, where two cannon shot emerged from the earth before builders erased the old remains. The stones likely marked a defensive line against raids or rival claims, while the mountain watched every mistake made below. Men may have bled on that ground long before nineteenth-century alterations dressed the wound in respectability.
Nineteenth century correspondence relating to alterations being undertaken at Shanganagh Castle mention the remains of an old castle. Two cannon shot were recovered from the site prior to its re-building (Turner 1987, 58). The castle is located east of Kiltuc Church (DU026-054001-) at the foot of the Dublin Mountains.
