Shane O'Neill, born around 1530 in County Tyrone, wanted to become chief of all the O'Neills. He refused English commands, allied with the MacDonnells, and fought rival O'Neill branches until his death in 1567. His birthplace still belongs to the northern landscape where that ambition first took shape.
