Settlement deserted

Settlement deserted, medieval

What is recorded here

Lea is not empty so much as redistributed: its town functions moved into the castle, the churchyard, the road and the memory of a tree large enough to circle with thirty-three feet of bark. What began as a royal borough and military staging post became a burning, a siege, a wasted manor and finally a Whit-Monday fair on the green. The fields keep the last of it, holding the shape of a place that stopped announcing itself but never stopped giving back what they brought.
Reference to a village here near Cullahill Castle (LA035-022001-) and church (LA035-021001-)(Feehan 1983, 383-4). No visible surface remains. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
